China's high-speed rail network is one of the great engineering achievements of the modern world. With over 40,000km of dedicated high-speed track and trains reaching 350km/h, it is faster than flying for most city pairs once you factor in airport check-in and security time. Here is everything you need to know.
Beijing β Shanghai: 4.5 hours | Beijing β Xi'an: 4.5 hours | Shanghai β Hangzhou: 45 minutes | Guilin β Yangshuo: 30 minutes | Chengdu β Chongqing: 1.5 hours
Types of High-Speed Trains
| Train Prefix | Max Speed | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| G Train (ι«ι) | 300β350 km/h | Major city pairs | Fastest, most comfortable, premium pricing |
| D Train (ε¨θ½¦) | 200β250 km/h | Regional routes | Slightly slower and cheaper than G trains |

Seat Classes Explained
| Class | Chinese Name | Layout | Our Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Business Class | εε‘εΊ§ | Lie-flat seats, 2+1, meal service | Worth it for overnight or 5+ hour journeys |
| First Class | δΈηεΊ§ | 2+2 seating, extra legroom, quieter | Recommended for 3+ hour journeys |
| Second Class | δΊηεΊ§ | 3+2 seating, standard spacing | Excellent value, perfectly comfortable |
For journeys under 2 hours, Second Class is perfectly fine β the seats are clean and comfortable. For 3+ hours, First Class is worth the upgrade (usually only $10β20 more). Business Class is a treat for very long journeys or if you want to arrive fresh.
How to Book Train Tickets
Option 1: Through China Cheat Sheet (Easiest)
We book all train tickets for our tour clients as part of the itinerary package. No queuing, no Chinese-language confusion, tickets ready on your phone. Contact us to arrange your trip.
Option 2: Trip.com or Ctrip
The most foreigner-friendly third-party booking platforms. Available in English, accept international credit cards, send e-tickets to your phone. A small service fee applies (~$3β5 per ticket).
Option 3: 12306.cn (Official)
China's official rail booking website. Has the cheapest prices and widest availability, but the interface is primarily in Chinese and accepting international cards can be unreliable. Best for experienced China travelers.
Option 4: At the Station
All major stations have dedicated windows for foreign passport holders. Bring your passport. Allow 30β45 minutes for potential queues. You will receive a physical ticket β keep it safe, you need it to exit the platform.
Tips for Navigating Chinese Train Stations
- Arrive 30β45 minutes early β stations are enormous and airport-style security screening is mandatory for everyone
- Always carry your passport β required for ticket collection and boarding; your name on the ticket must match your passport exactly
- Find your platform number early β displayed on large screens about 15β30 minutes before departure; platforms can be far from the waiting area
- Gates close 5 minutes before departure β Chinese trains are extremely punctual; do not cut it close
- Save station names in Chinese β show taxi drivers the Chinese characters to avoid confusion (e.g. εδΊ¬εη« for Beijing South Station)
- Note which station β major cities have multiple stations (Beijing has Beijing Station, Beijing South, and Beijing West). Always confirm which station your train departs from.
